Thanksgiving is the admission of dependence. Through it we recognize that in the physical realm God "gives [us] life and breath and everything else" - Acts 17:25
If we trust God to work in all of our circumstances for our own good, then we should give Him thanks in all of those circumstances. We shouldn't just give him thanks for the evil (Job 1:20-21, James 1:2-4) that we learned something through, but for the good that He will bring out of that evil.
"I will have mercy on whim I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion" - Exodus 33:19. God is saying "I am under obligation to no on". He's GOD. And he is a just God. It is only purely by his goodness that we aren't all eternally burning right now.
God wants you to give thanks to him by recognizing that it wasn't you that did something - it was Him. "Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you" - 1 Peter 5:6-7. "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble" - James 4:6
"My father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will" - Matthew 26:39
